I took this picture of white rhinos drinking at night from a subterranean blind. I was seated in a chair that put my eyesight at water level -- the lowest possible shooting angle. This gives all animals, even large ones, greater stature. The artificial lights on the small pond provided enough illumination for pictures, but the ISO had to be high. I was shooting through one-way glass (which caused about one f/stop of light loss), so the rhinos had no idea my photo tour group and I were there. We had to be absolutely silent, of course. My settings were 1/60, f/5.0, and 10,000 ISO, and I used a 24-105mm lens set to 50mm. In the black background there was too much noise showing, so I selected just that area and darkened it to essentially eliminate the noisy texture. My next photo tour to Africa where we'll have these kinds of blinds will be in March, 2026.
