Two nights ago my photo tour group enjoyed a painting with light session. I chose a stand of trees that was particularly attractive and one where we could shoot it from the land. I took a few test shots so I could judge the exposure, and then gave the settings to my clients: 6 seconds, f/5.6, and 1250 ISO. Everyone exposed the scene as I illuminated the trees with a moving flashlight. The biggest challenge was focusing in the minimal light of the flashlight (because of the distance, the light fall off made the flashlight look diminished). With live view or simply by zooming in on the trees, and with critically studying the LCD screen on the back of the camera, we could do it. The sky was quite pretty, but I wanted something a little more colorful so I used a dusk sky from my files and embellished the scene using the Sky Replacement command in Photoshop.
