I photographed this Siberian tiger in China when the air temperature was minus 36 degrees. You can see the cat's breath in the frigid air. Captive tigers are held in this facility on a large tract of land -- my estimate is about 30 to 40 acres -- and viewing them is like being on safari in Africa. The biggest challenge is keeping fingers warm and viable, and I do that by shooting only with a glove liner on my right hand. In the right pocket of my parka, I have 6 hand warmers. Together, they make the pocket hot, not just warm. When my hand and fingers get color -- about every minute or two -- I grab the warmers and instantly the heat restores comfort and prevents frost bite. In this way, I maintain dexterity in my fingers so I can work the camera. I used a Canon 500mm f/4 telephoto for the shot, and my settings were 1/640, f/8, and 400 ISO.
