I photographed this panther chameleon during my semi-annual frog and reptile workshop in St. Louis. It is native to Madagascar, and the red coloration was especially striking. We photograph these animals in a hotel conference room with out of focus photographic print backgrounds to look natural, but I have so many natural looking foliage backgrounds in my photo library that I replaced the original background in Photoshop for a definite improvement. The background was shaded, and note how the ring flash I used on the reptile matches the lighting throughout the image. The advantage of a ring flash is that it envelopes the subject and provides soft light. My settings were 1/200, f/32, 400 ISO.
