Pictures of patterns require, in my opinion, complete depth of field. If the edges are soft the image quality is degraded. To make sure pictures like these tropical leaves I captured in a greenhouse are sharp from edge to edge, you need to use a small lens aperture -- at least f/16 -- and if the lighting is muted, as it was in the greenhouse, a tripod is essential so you can choose a low ISO and the speed of the shutter becomes irrelevant. Also, make the back of the camera (i.e. the plane of the sensor) as parallel as possible to the plane of the subject. This significantly contributes to having extensive depth of field.

Bob Vestal - This is really lovely image, Jim. Reminder about plane of the sensor is appreciated. Thank you.
