My semi-annual Frog and Reptile workshop starts today in Kansas City. It takes place in a hotel conference room, and the small animals (this is essentially a macro workshop) are placed on plants, branches, and leaves to simulate a natural environment. This is a shot I took in a previous workshop. It is a variable dart frog native to Peru, and it's exceptionally tiny being about 1/2 inch in length. I used a 50mm macro lens with one extension tube as well as a ring flash for illumination. The close proximity of the lens/flash combination provides enough light to use f/32, and with such small subjects it's important to garner as much depth of field as possible. Shallow dog means most of their intriguing detail is rendered out of focus. The light from the ring flash wraps around the small animals creating shadowless light which simulates diffused light outdoors.
