I took this portrait of a Berber man in the Kasbah de Telouet in southern Morocco. This 19th century fortified castle was the seat of power along one of the trade routes across the desert. It was very dark inside, and the only light came from a few windows. This created powerful contrast. In exposing for a picture like this, I take a couple of test shots to examine the lighting on the LCD screen. I don't trust a meter in this kind of situation. My settings were 1/100, f/4.0, and 2000 ISO, and I used a 24-105mm lens. If I had used the automatic meter reading from the camera, the picture would have been much lighter. Instead, I wanted the drama of extreme contrast from this kind of natural sidelighting.
