I have a technique of shooting in the cold that protects the fingers on your right hand from pain and frostbite, yet you still have the dexterity needed to work a camera. I wear only a thin glove liner on my right hand, and in the right pocket of my parka I place 5 or 6 chemical heat packet hand warmers. This makes the pocket hot, not just warm. Every minute or two, when my right hand gets cold, I grab the wad of warmers to infuse heat back into my fingers. This is the only technique that works well. I photographed this beautiful mountain lion in Montana during a winter workshop there, and on this day the white/gray sky was a perfect complement to the snow. I shot this with a 70-200mm, and the settings were 1/400, f/4.5, and 100 ISO. I find that when photographing in the snow, the eyes of animals tend to go a little dark due to the influence of the bright snow on the meter. So, I use the dodge tool in Photoshop to bring the eyes back to the correct exposure.

Jim - Thank you very much, Barbara. I love photographing animals in the winter. They are so beautiful in their full coats, and the winter environment is so beautiful as well.
