These are crested caracaras I photographed from a blind in south Texas. Interactions like this usually only last for fractions of a second, so you have to watch the birds through the viewfinder with your finger on the shutter. In addition, even though they are perched and there is apparently no movement, birds can flick their heads, feathers and feet so quickly that a fast shutter is a good idea to freeze unexpected movement. I took this shot with a 560mm focal length (100 - 400mm plus a 1.4x teleconverter), and my settings were 1/2500, f/11, and 5000 ISO. The combination of the Canon R5 and noise mitigating software (Neat Image in this case) gives no hint that I used such a high ISO setting. I was here previewing the setups and the blinds for a photo workshop I'm conducting in south Texas for birds and bluebonnets in April, 2023.
