I'm in New Mexico now leading a photo tour here. This morning we had a great sunrise at Bosque del Apache, and as usual at this time of year, there were thousands of birds waiting for the sun to come up so they could fly into the nearby fields and feed. These sandhill cranes took off into the sun, and the edge lighting on the foreword surface of their wings as well as the backlighting coming through the tip feathers made this especially beautiful. My settings were 1/3200, f/10, and 3200 ISO. I was shooting on electronic shutter mode on the Canon R5 at 20 frames per second, and I used a 100-500mm Canon zoom along with a 1.4x teleconverter. When photographing birds, I don't like to use a tripod because I feel it's too inhibiting in my ability to follow birds in flight. I blurred the background a little so it wasn't so distracting. I've cropped the image about 15%.
