I photographed this scarlet ibis in Brazil. I have yet to capture one in flight, but even with its wings folded, it's a stunning bird. The intense red color really stands out against the muted green foliage. I used a 500mm telephoto to fill as much of the frame as possible, and my settings were 1/500, f/5.6, and 1600 ISO. The general rule for choosing a shutter speed when using long lenses is the speed should be the reciprocal of the focal length of the lens, or faster. In other words, with a 500mm telephoto, the shutter should, ideally, be 1/500 or faster assuming you have enough light. This insures sharp pictures. The magnified movement when hand holding long lenses make it easy to take less-than-sharp pictures.
