There was an incident during my recent polar bear photo tour in Canada that afforded a wonderful photo opportunity. A bear was sleeping in an elevated niche amongst coastal rocks when a larger bear climbed the slope and approached first bear. Size matters, obviously, because the smaller bear quickly got up and moved away from the intruder and disappeared over the ridge. A few moments later, the smaller bear stuck its head up to see if there still might be any danger. I took the shot, but due to my focal length -- 700mm -- the distant bear was a bit less than sharp. Even with the significant distance between my tour group and the bears, the shallow depth of field wass evident. In post-processing, I applied Topaz Sharpen AI to the soft part of the image, and that made a big difference. Finally, the original sky was boring, featureless, and bland, so I added a complimentary but non-distracting sky. I didn't want dramatic clouds to take attention away from the subjects, but at the same time, I wanted a little more interest in the background.
