I'm not a big fan of photographing grazing horses, but capturing the sunrise between the two animals in this type of composition changes everything for me. My original intension was to show the horses as silhouettes, but I experimented in Adobe Camera Raw and moved the shadows slider to the right. To my surprise, the silhouetted horses had retained so much detail in the shadows that their white hair shown beautifully. I decided I liked this type of rendition better than black forms against the colorful sky. My settings were 1/400, f/5.6, 100 ISO, and I used a 100-400mm Canon zoom hand held. For this kind of static situation, I used shutter priority. I virtually always use daylight white balance for all my outdoor shooting, and this is particularly important at sunrise and sunset to retain the golden color.

Jim - Hi Lorraine, I was shooting fast and just grabbed shutter priority. I could have used manual mode with auto ISO, too, which is what I always use for action.

Lorraine Piskin - You know how I love the white horses so this is a beautiful capture of them.
Why did you use Shutter Priority for still subjects other than I suspect to set the speed of the shutter so you could adjust the aperture?
