When the sky is clear and a sunset is inevitable, many of the costumed models here in Venice go to San Giorgio Island to pose for photographers in front of the setting sun. In terms of exposure, you can handle the significant contrast three ways. 1) Fill flash, 2) HDR (but this is challenging since people can't hold perfectly motionless), or 3) Use a single exposure that is a compromise between the highlights and shadows and then, in post-processing, lighten the shadows and tone down the highlights. I used the latter method for this shot. In addition, I added clarity and vibrance in Adobe Camera Raw plus I used the burn tool in Photoshop to darken the sky for added drama. My settings were 1/800 (I used a shutter speed this fast to freeze the feathers which were being blown by the wind), f/9, and 1250 ISO. I used a 16-35mm wide angle zoom for the photo.
