An hour ago an intense electrical storm moved across middle Tennessee, and the clouds were ominous. Scary, actually, except that I love photographing devastating storm skies. After I had taken two dozen images, the rain came. I wanted to do something cool with one of the cloud pictures, so I combined it with a tall ship I'd photographed a few years ago off the coast of Norfolk, Virginia. In Photoshop, I pasted the clouds over the ship with Edit > paste, and then I added a layer mask using Layer > layer mask > reveal all. Then, with the foreground/background color boxes black/white, respectively, I very carefully brushed away the clouds from the water, the sails, the hull, and the flags.

Jim - Hi Skip, The dark ropes just stay dark. That's what a layer mask does when it's manipulated by using one of the blend modes (multiply) in this case.

Skip Kask - Jim: I remember that trip. My question is how did you deal with the ropes in the sky.
