I’m flying to Iceland today to begin another photo tour in this very beautiful country. This picture is from my last trip. My two favorite subjects there are blue ice and the aurora borealis, and in this composite I combined a 30-second exposure (using a 10-stop neutral density filter) of a large chunk of glacial ice on a black sand beach with a 15-second exposure of the aurora. I added some green to the water and darkened it near the horizon to blend the distant ocean with the new sky. I photographed the blue ice with a 100-400mm telephoto, and for the sky I used a 16-35mm wide angle wide angle set to 24mm. It’s interesting that even though these two lenses are at the opposite end of the spectrum, the composite works.

Jim - Thanks, Bob. I really need to put online a bunch of video tutorials showing how I do these various
techniques.

Bob Turner - This is a great composite. I own your prior tutorials concerning blends and sky replacement. This composite would be a great additional composite tutorial. Especially that it includes two focal lengths.
