This is Mt. Merapi within the Bromo Caldera on East Java, Indonesia. The first time I visited this active volcanic area was in the late 90's, and I was still shooting a medium format film camera. The mountain erupted at sunrise, and I had just finished a roll of film when the plume of smoke started rising. I feverishly loaded another roll of 220 Fujichrome Velvia, not wanting to look at the eruption because I didn't want to see what I was missing. By the time I was ready to shoot again, the ferocious wind that morning carried the plume of smoke off to the side of the mountain. It had originally emanated from the top of the active volcano. At first I was very disappointed, but then I decided I didn't mind the column of smoke off to one side. My settings were unrecorded, but they were probably 1/30, f/4.5. I used a 350mm lens which was equivalent to about a 200mm telephoto in the full frame digital format. The transparency was digitized by an Imacon scanner.

Barbara Vickers - "...I didn't want to see what I was missing..." That's you alright! Been everywhere, seen everything, photo'd it all and shared it with all of us. Thanks again.
