I've been in remote areas here in Ethiopia for a few days without a good Internet connection which is why I haven't posted pictures. Finally, I'm back in civilization so I can share some images. The women of the Surma tribe first started wearing lip plates as a way to disfigure themselves so they would be considered undesirable as sex slaves to neighboring tribes. It has evolved as a sign of beauty, and the larger the plate, the more stature the woman has in the tribe. Young girls and women start off by cutting their lower lip and inserting a small plate; gradually they wear larger and larger plates. Most of the portraits I did in this village were taken with a 100-500mm Canon lens so I could stand back several feet from the subjects. The settings for this picture were 1/320, f/9, and 640 ISO.
